As the title of this album would suggest, Buddy DeFranco and the members of his quartet were in a mellow mood for the session, a particularly successful one. The clarinet being the kind of instrument it is-sharp and penetrating-mellowness of sound is not always the easiest trick in the world. But when the clarinet is played with mellowness in mind-and played skillfully-the result is unquestionably rewarding, musically. In the case of Buddy DeFranco, he hasn’t achieved his fame on the basis of mellowness; generally DeFranco is asso- ciated with clarity of tone and dazzling facility with this difficult instrument. But DeFranco can play pretty, too. And swing. As evidence, one submits this collection which comprises several originals-there’s DeFranco’s own “Minor Incident” and “The Bright One,” written by DeFranco with Kenny Drew and pianist Sonny Clark’s appropriately titled “Sonny’s Idea.” The rest are all in the familiar standard vein, all mellow, of course; one of them, especially, is seldom heard as anything other than a vocal-Matt Dennis’ exercise in irony, “Everything Happens to Me.” Since a song and its lyrics are often indelibly wedded, it was DeFranco’s aim to play “Every- thing” while suggesting the same wryness as though it were being sung.
Boniface Ferdinand Leonardo “Buddy” DeFranco has long been regarded as the foremost clarinetist of this era, succeeding his onetime (and still, for that matter) idol, Benny Goodman. Young DeFranco was originally inspired by Goodman and ultimately he be- came, in the opinion of most musicians, the first clari- netist to become represented in “modern” jazz. For upwards of a decade DeFranco has won the Down Beat poll as well as a number of others.
