This handy compendium of melodies from Doris Day’s hit motion pictures presents the singing star in some of her brightest moments and in some of her finest songs. Fortunate as she has been in having such sterling music to work with, the songs have been equally fortunate in having her as interpreter. All through her screen career she has been supported by first-rate songs by first-rate composers and lyricists, and in turn, Doris has come through with performances that are distinctively her own and marked with that special quality of intimacy and freshness that is so characteristic of her. Her films have all been successes, many of them establishing records, and this survey of highlights from them is more than a colorful souvenir of her movie career to date, it is a brilliant demonstration of how to handle a song.
Her very first movie, “Romance on the High Seas,” catapulted her into the starring ranks, and provided her with the song It’s Magic, which sold well into the millions and established her as a recording star as well. From that time forward, her name has rarely been absent from the best- seller lists and her artful singing has established her securely as one of the nation’s most popular entertainers. Another collection could be made of her splendid single records, and still another of the highly entertaining duets she has made with other popular stars. But here the emphasis is on her Hollywood material, and worthy material it is.
Tea for Two represents one of her early films, a delightful entertainment that drew upon the music of the twenties, with special reference to the music of Vincent Youmans. Gene Nelson was partnered with her in the movie, which is repre- sented here by the title song, written by Irving Caesar and Youmans.
Al Dubin and Harry Warren wrote Lullaby of Broadway, which appeared as the title song in another of Doris’ starring roles. The song was originally written for “Golddiggers of 1935,” and attained the rank of a popular classic; Doris’ version, heard here, has attained the same stature.
The same year that produced “Lullaby of Broadway” also saw Doris appearing in a de- lightfully sentimental musical called “On Moon- light Bay” with a score made up of old favorites. One of the most enduring was Cuddle Up a Little Closer, written by Otto Harbach and Karl Hoschna, and presenting Doris in one of her most appealing moods.
Perhaps the earliest indication of her accom- plishments as an actress came when she was cast in “Young Man with a Horn,” with Kirk Douglas as the musician whose career was loosely based on that of Bix Beiderbecke. Harry James supplied the trumpet for the sound track, and is heard with Doris in I May Be Wrong, by Henry Sullivan and Harry Ruskin.
One of her most successful movies was “I’ll See You in My Dreams,” a biographical musical that set new records at the Radio City Music Hall. Based on the career of Gus Kahn, played by Danny Thomas, the film starred Doris as Mrs. Kahn, and offered many of the composer’s finest Isham Jones, and perhaps one of his most famous is It Had to Be You. Doris sang this in “I’ll See You in My Dreams,” turning in one of her most engaging vocalizations.
As a finale to her collection of songs from her movies, Doris presents the title song of her most recent movie, “Love Me or Leave Me.” The story of Ruth Etting, the film is not only rich in melodic appeal, but presents one of the deepest and most dramatic performaces yet by Doris Day. This song, too, was written by Gus Kahn with Walter Donaldson, and like any number heard in this collection is transformed by Doris Day into a personal and appealing listening experience.

(Cuddle Up a Little Closer)」です。
(Young Man with a Horn)』への出演だったと言えるでしょう。
(I’ll See You in My Dreams)』があります。 (It Had to Be You)」です。
(Love Me or Leave Me)』の主題歌を披露します。
