This is the third EmArcy LP by Helen Merrill. At the time of her debut on EmArcy MG-36006, her career had been a sporadic series of ups and downs motivated by alternating sieges of ambition to succeed in show business and moods of frustration during which it seemed wiser to settle down as a housewife. Her second LP “Helen Merrill with Strings” on MG36057, plowed a little deeper into the public consciousness. By now, enough musicians and critics, enough fans whose pockets contained the price of an LP or an evening at the local club where she might be appearing, had emerged to justify Helen’s decision to stay with it, to maintain without compromise the style she had found for herself, and to make her own way in a straight line, the last zigzag behind her. Now barely twenty-six years old, Helen has been in and out of music more than a decade, and was a band vocalist at one time or another with everybody from Jerry Wald and Ray Eberle to Earl “Fatha” Hines. It can safely be said, however, that she is not the band-vocalist type; the material she likes to sing, and her own approach to it, could never conform with the strictures imposed by such a job. Helen has that rarest of qualities, an individual jazz timbre, a sort of personal slight throatiness, a catch in the voice through which the tones sometimes emerge a frac- tion of a second late, coupled with a sense of phrasing and of drama rarely equalled among modern singers.
The twelve tunes in this new collection were recorded June 26, 27, and 29, 1956, with a variety of personnels. Four of the numbers featured five strings; on four others, a reed quintet and one trombonist can be heard with four rhythm; on the remainder there are six horns and four rhythm. Gil Evans, who arranged and conducted the sessions, was born in Toronto, Ontario in 1912 of Australian parentage. Raised partly in British Columbia, later in the state of Washington, he was entirely self-taught as a musician, leading his own band in Stockton, California from 1933-8 and remaining with the group as arranger when Skinnay Ennis took it over, staying until 1941. From 1941-3 and 1946-8 (the interim was spent in the Army), he made his mark in modern music as the writer of many of the Claude Thornhill band’s greatest scores. Since leaving Thornhill he has free- lanced extensively in New York.
Most arrangers are former instrumentalists who have given up a horn to concentrate on the piano. Gil reversed the procedure by taking up piano seriously a couple of years ago; he was heard recently with the Gerry Mulligan group at Basin Street. For this Helen Merrill session, Gil showed his exceptional skill in designing backgrounds that suited the special requirements of this very lovely voice.
People Will Say We’re in Love kicks off the first side at a fast pace in a boppish groove. This is the lesser-known side of Miss Merrill, all the more striking for the contrast it provides with the slower treatments heard on most of the performances in this set. The trombone solo is by Jimmy Cleveland.
By Myself opens with Helen singing the verse ad lib to Barry Galbraith’s sympathetic guitar, then goes into tempo for a medium-beat treatment of the chorus. There is a solo on this one by a well-known trumpet player who is rumored to be a farmer in private life.
Anyplace I Hang My Hat is Home starts in an Ellingtonia mood, with a light boogie-woogie riff. The tune is the blues in spirit and partly in form. The trombone touches toward the end are by Joe Bennett.
I’ve Never Seen You is a most unusual and attractive piece of material discovered by Gil Evans in which Helen evokes a tender mood: I’ve never seen you wake at dawn and brush a dream from your eyes…
He Was Too Good To Me, an old Rodgers and Hart song, is a fine example of Evans’ use of the strings and of Helen’s sensitive dramatic approach to a beautiful lyric and melody. The side con- cludes with A New Town Is a Blue Town, one of the lesser-known but more musically successful songs from Pajama Game.
You’re Lucky to Me, a medium-paced item that opens the second side, was written the year Helen Merrill was born, an Andy Razaf-Eubie Blake production from Lew Leslie’s Blackbirds of 1930 in which Memories of You was the better-known companion hit. The alto sax solo is by John LaPorta and the piano solo by Hank Jones.
Where Flamingos Fly, by John Benson Brooks, tells another sad story of the boat taking my baby far away, easing into a slight tango rhythm and achieving an exotic mood. Dream of You is the great Sy Oliver song which Sy originated and sang with the late Jimmie Lunceford’s band of the 1930’s. This interesting treatment opens simply with Oscar Pettiford on bass, joined later by Galbraith’s guitar, with the horns finally entering on the last eight bars of the opening chorus; toward the end the accompaniment again dies down until Oscar once more emerges to provide the sole backing. I’m A Fool to Want You, is a slow, minor melody on which Frank Sinatra is listed as co-composer.
I’m Just a Lucky So-and-So was first written and recorded by Duke Ellington in 1945. Jerome Richardson supplies the appropriate flute flight behind the line birds in every tree during the second eight bars; Oscar Pettiford is again heard toward the end. The concluding item, Troubled Waters, originated in an old Mae West movie, “Belle of the Nineties, which featured Duke Ellington’s band. This remarkable song unfortunately was obscured by another number from the film that became more famous, My Old Flame. In his long introduction here, Evans sets the scene for one of Helen’s most dramatically effective performances.
In the notes to her last album, Helen Merrill with Strings, it was observed that “There is nobody else quite like her! Helen proves it again here. She also gives the lie to the celebrated admonition of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow: “Tell me not in mournful numbers, life is but an empty dream!” When Helen sings mournful numbers, life takes on a melancholy charm and there is indeed nothing empty in this, her Dream of You.
