A philosopher once posed the thoughtful question: “What is more difficult to describe-a truly memorable poem or a truly beautiful woman?” The learned gentleman must have been romantic as well as sage by nature, because he decided beyond question that a flight of fanciful adjec- tives could always more easily cull the essence of fantasy than that of flesh.
That thought indicates exactly the dilemma one faces when one tries to pin-point in words the complex, often paradoxical atmosphere of lovely Fran Jeffries. Given the task of communicating that atmosphere in print, one is tempted to take a set of poker dice (an ordinary pair wouldn’t suffice), inscribe each face with provocative de- scriptives, then shoot the works to see where the adjec- tives might fall. With Fran, you could be sure that any random toss would turn up a combination which would fit the bill…
The striking Miss Jeffries is possessed of a beauty of face cool and classical, with a haunting touch of the medi- tative about it… her form-neither slim nor florid-is best characterized as statuesque. And, if that combina- tion suggests something like a living replica of a Greek Aphrodite, one need only note a logical bit of heredity in her background at least partly responsible: her father is Greek (her mother is French). However, lest the allu- sion accent too much certain of Fran’s classic qualities of appearance, let’s hasten to add that the personality which informs her frame with an excitingly vivid life is as contemporary as tomorrow.
That personality-a delightfully warm and out-going one, by the way-is a neat and thorough blend of a num- ber of seemingly contradictory qualities. For example, Fran gives the impression of a fresh, uninvolved naivete -yet she’s possessed of a natural wisdom far beyond her years in its instinct and thrust. This partly explains her impeccable taste, both as a person and as a performer. In private and public life alike, Fran gives off an aura of quiet, natural humility-yet (and especially when appear- ing with a song before an audience) she holds complete command of the scene with a compelling, sometimes near- hypnotic forcefulness.
But, all of this is only telling you about some of the factors that help add to the effect of her voice. (It’s just as attractive as she is herself.) Luckily, in describing that voice, one can explain a good deal by stating plainly and simply that Fran has that all-too-rare gift: a “star sound”. In other words, Fran sounds like no one else around-she just sounds like Fran. And, that sound is applied with such versatility that her voice can reflect with mirror-like accuracy all the multi-colors of her per- sonality in all its changing moods. Thus, for example, taking the album at hand, she can be as direct and inno- cent (one might almost say: “chaste”) as in her ver- sions of Gershwin’s Isn’t It A Pity? or Cy Coleman’s I’m Gonna Laugh You Right Out Of My Life-or she can wail with a great sense of humor on a number like Gershwin’s neglected Lorelei.
Fran follows through on sound with a great flair for the drama or the fun of lyrics. She has a neatly personal way of making each word count and tell and she keeps a story line moving forward with thoughtful, developing continuity. That talent, comparatively unique on today’s scene with “pop” singers, takes on dimension when sup- ported by the firmness of her musicianship. Fran isn’t a studied stylist-everything that comes out of her is her’s her own, springing from inherent and natural feeling. Like we said before, the talent here is fresh-and, inci- dentally, presented in this album’s grooves for the first time anywhere on records.
One more thing to mention about Fran-because it ac- tually tells a lot about what she’s all about as a per- former: though she can sing ‘em well as the next, she avoids songs either too familiar or overdone. If she is aware of another singer’s version of one or another num- ber, she’ll carefully avoid the singing of it-just so there’s no chance of an outside styling influence. She loves to dig for good songs, old, new and from off-the-beaten-track- settling on those she feels she can add a certain personal something to. From what she terms “the thrill of discov- ery” with the treasures she finds, she passes on to a regi- men of rehearsal so rigorous that she might be likened to a vocal commando. She just won’t perform a song until she knows it “cold”, until every willful turn of tune, phrase and lyrical matter is second nature. This does not, paradoxically, result in performances that are pat-every new rendering of a specific number by Fran has some new twist or touch. It’s just that the girl is a dedicated perfectionist-and out of full control, she feels, comes the ease of fluidity itself.
Frankly, the overall description of Fran till now still seems to have fallen short of the mark in capturing her elusive charms in words. So, it seems best to let you and your mind start juggling the adjectives. All you have to do is to start listening. One audition of the twelve cuts of this album and we think that you’ll agree that “FRAN CAN REALLY HANG YOU UP THE MOST”!

(Isn’t It A Pity?)」 (I’m Gonna Laugh You Right Out Of My Life)」では、彼女は極めてストレートで純真(あるいは「清廉」とさえ言えるほど)な表現を見せる。
