SINCERELY, CONTI spotlights the “contemporary jazz” artistry of a brilliant young trumpeter- Conti Candoli.
It is significant that Conti’s work here represents the first jazz recorded by BETHLEHEM RECORDS on the West Coast, far from the home base in Manhattan. Conti’s mere 27 years encompass a full, luminous musical career. His high-flying trumpet has been heard with the bands of Woody Herman, Charlie Barnet and Charlie Ventura – to name a few. In 1947, he toured Europe on that historic junket with Chubby Jackson. (Remember that hit recording of “Lemon Drop” that the boys made in Sweden?) Perhaps Conti’s greatest recognition attended his stints with Stan Kenton – first in 1948, and later from 1951 through 1953.
As a native of South Bend, Indiana, it figured that Conti would attend Notre Dame. It figured also that he’d take up the trumpet. His older brother Pete happened to be a pretty fair trumpeter, and the horn – as well as the inspiration were within easy range. Pete started Conti on the horn when the latter was 13, and later, after Pete had started making a name for himself in the big time, Conti went to school and waited for Pete to come home to relate the glamor and excitement of life on the road. Today, with SINCERELY, CONTI as our evidence, we’d conclude that “kid brother” has arrived to add new luster to the family fame.
For this session, Conti has combined four extraordinary talents to produce exciting modern sounds. Of his own work one knows Conti for memorable solos with Kenton on such waxings as “All About Ronnie” and “Jeepers Creepers” (These with a Chris Connor vocal.) But now, for the first time, Conti’s own over-all conception is given full sway. Facility and imagination romp together with felicitous results. Perhaps you’ll recognize in Conti’s style more than a trace of the older masters. After all, the best of modern art has its feet firmly planted in fradition. Conti’s first idol was Roy Eldridge, then Dizzy Gillespie. Presently I’d say that he sounds like Conti Candoli, and personally, I like it!
Conti’s pianist here is Claude Williamson, who appears with the permission of Capitol Records. Claude has been working in Southern California with the Lighthouse All-Stars. He combines the best features of several modern styles, affecting a blend that may be recognized distinctly as his own.
Stan Levey was among the first “progressive” drummers. He has played with most of the modernist trail-blazers includ- ing Stan, Dizzy and Charlie Parker. His time is infallible and his solos are dynamic, explosive.”
Max Bennett, bass, is another Kenton alumnus, who most recently appeared with the Sauter-Finegan band. He’s a standout in the brilliant new crop of bass players, and here he exhibits tasteful solo work, as well as a firm rhythmic- harmonic foundation for Conti and Claude to build on.
Now, listen!
