THERE’S something about the way Ethel Ennis sings a song that commands attention. It’s a quality that makes you realize within the first few bars that a song is being sung by a performer whose taste and sensitivity adds a new dimension to every tune she touches.
It’s her unique approach to a song that makes Ethel Ennis more than just “another girl singer.” And it’s her treatment of a song that has caused many savants of the music world to dub her a “female Nat ‘King’ Cole.” This is hard billing to live up to, but once Ethel gets rolling into a song, it’s easy to see what they mean.
Completely at home with such evergreens as Happiness Is a Thing Called Joe, Taking a Chance on Love, I Cried for You and My Foolish Heart, as well as with such seldom heard, but still excellent, material as Change of Scenery and I Remember (The Corn Fields of Home), Ethel sets up a comfortable and caressing mood with her sure and easy vocal strokes.
The intimacy and warmth of her styling was carefully developed through
a round of appearances in small night clubs around the country, beginning at age fifteen in her native Baltimore. It’s a training ground that’s hard to equal. And it was in such a small club, The Red Fox in Baltimore, that she first came to the attention of Capitol Records.
This is her debut album for Capitol. It’s a premiere performance that will be remembered.
