MG V-8003
the genius of Charlie Parker #1
NIGHT and DAY
Charlie Parker and His Orchestra
Charlie “Yardbird” Parker is gone now, of course; but the legacy he left jazz is so vast it almost defies ac- counting. The truth is, Parker not only influenced virtu- ally every modern jazz saxophonist within the last decade, he also influenced every jazzman on any instrument. Still, for all the derivative qualities heard in other jazzmen around today, the sound and approach to jazz of Charlie Parker is distinctive – so distinctive that only a few notes are needed to stamp a Parker record. But then, Parker gave an awful lot of himself to his music. “Music,” he said once, “is your own experience, your thoughts, your wisdom… If you don’t live it, it won’t come out of your horn…”
Parker “lived it,” of course; he died March 12, 1955 -at 34, a young man only in years. The legends of Char- lie “Yardbird” Parker are many, certainly, but for now
it is enough to talk about the man’s music. Parker, who was born Aug. 29, 1920, in Kansas City, has been identi- fied as one of the men responsible for the abrupt change in jazz known at the time as “bebop.” (Parker himself never liked the word, “bebop;” he preferred to call it “music.”) What Parker did, in the early 1940s, was bring to jazz his genius for improvisation, to take old patterns and turn them into exciting new ones in which many un- usual ideas were suggested with infinite subtlety and exe- cuted with oddly sardonic and yet matchlessly beautiful
tone.
In this album Parker is presented with a big band, at times with a string section, in tunes arranged by Joe Lipman, one of the few arrangers around today who can equate his commercial sense with art. This, it goes with- out saying, is art.
The tunes are:
NIGHT AND DAY
ALMOST LIKE BEING IN LOVE
I CAN’T GET STARTED
WHAT IS THIS THING CALLED LOVE LAURA
TEMPTATION
AUTUMN IN NEW YORK
LOVER
STELLA BY STARLIGHT
DANCING IN THE DARK
