SWINGING with FLIP
FLIP PHILLIPS and his Orchestra
featuring: CHARLIE SHAVERS OSCAR PETERSON RAY BROWN BARNEY KESSEL BUDDY, RICH
It is interesting that one of the selections in this “Swinging With Flip” album is entitled “Salute to Pres.” Although Flip Phillips is not at all similar to Lester “Pres” Young in style or concept he certainly is aware of the debt all modern saxophonists owe to “Pres” – hence the title; it’s an original, of course, by Flip himself, one of two in this collection.
The other Phillips original is “Blues for the Midgets” (and just where this title came from no one is quite sure.) There is in the playing of Flip Phillips a genuine puckishness which might well be expressed in writing a blues for midgets (whose blues are no different than anyone else’s). This is a major characteristic of the Phillips saxophone – the sense of fun behind it (well illustrated in another nicely titled song, Duke Ellington’s “Cottontail”) and the musicianlike way he expresses his fun. It is a varying thing, of course; Flip can work an audience to a frenzy; a minute later he can put them in a dreamy mood. It’s all Flip, a variable fellow with a saxophone mood. He got his nick- name mainly because he could make an audience “flip,” which is to say grow ecstatic over his jump music, but he got his overall reputation by also being able to play some of the more beautiful passages in the Woody Herman Herd’s early days.
Joseph “Flip” Phillips is a native of Brooklyn, who started out as a clari- netist, utltimately switching to the tenor saxophone in 1942. Two years later he was making jazz history with the Herman Herd and following that he joined Norman Granz touring Jazz at the Philharmonic, where he has remained to this day.
No tenor saxophone can swing if he doesn’t have a swinging rhythm section behind him-and Flip has one of the very best on these sides, including Oscar Peterson, piano; Barney Kessel, guitar; Ray Brown, bass, and Buddy Rich, drums. Charlie Shavers, the trumpet ace, is also featured.
