PERT, pretty Pier Angeli can sing! She can sing with heart, tenderness and with a cer- tain frankness and naiveté that is totally dis- arming. Her voice may not be classic in training or marked with the knowing touch of experience, but it is fresh, vibrant and carries a ring of sin- cerity.
In her initial debut as a recording artist, Pier has wisely chosen to sing songs that are close to the heart, songs she understands. These are the songs of her native Italy, and her awareness of their origin is quite evident in every note she sings. All of these songs have been performed countless times before, but Pier manages to breathe a simple, unspoiled yet eloquent new life into these old world favorites. She knows each and every song well and she manages to do very well by them. This first album will, for young Pier Angeli, mark the successful launch- ing of still another career.
When Hollywood first saw this wistful and appealing charmer in the film “Teresa” back in 1950, it knew immediately that a new star had been born. Italian-born Pier Angeli has more than justified this belief with her acting per- formances in such motion pictures as “The Story Of Three Loves,” “Sombrero,” “Flame And The Flesh” and “Somebody Up There Likes Me.”
Born in Sardinia as Anna Maria Pierangeli, she entered the world only a few seconds before her twin sister, Maria Luisa. Her parents came from Pesaro on the Adriatic, not far from Ri- mini. Her father, a construction engineer, estab- lished his home in Sardinia while engaged in public works projects. Later in 1935, he moved with his family to Rome where he became suc- cessful as an architect.
From the outset, Pier’s father was violently opposed to his daughter making any attempt at an acting career. Had it not been for her mother, she might never have begun the quest. Mrs. Pier- angeli had always dreamed of being an actress, and for nearly ten years successfully partici- pated in amateur productions throughout north- ern Italy. It was Pier’s mother who encouraged her when her big chance finally came.
The big chance came in the form of French film director Leonide Moguy, who happened to meet Pier at the home of a friend. He tested her for a leading role in a film he was planning called, “Tomorrow Is Too Late.” The test was a success and Pier was signed to co-star opposite Vittorio De Sica. Since “Tomorrow Is Too Late,” Pier Angeli has moved on to the dazzling and glamorous heights of movie stardom.
Since her arrival in the United States, Pier has learned to speak English fluently, has trav- eled extensively and in 1954 married Vic Da- mone, a young chap who does pretty well as a singer himself. In 1955 Vic and Pier became the parents of a boy with the very long monicker of Perry Rocco Luigi Damone.
This album adds a fresh new laurel to an al- ready glowing wreath. Like all her other laurels, she wears this one well. Her voice brings a new lilt to such Italian classics as “Non Ti Scordar Di Me” (Say You Will Not Forget Me), “Anema E Core,” “Amore Baciami,” and “Luna Rossa.” She also includes two very recent Italian songs that took America by storm-“Torero” and “Vol- are.”
Pier Angeli conveys in this album the same youthful and refreshing beauty that her physical features do when they are flashed on the silver screen. She has been caught on this record in much the same manner as she has been caught so often on camera. You will like Pier Angeli the singer. It is a role that suits her nicely and this is clearly indicated in every note of every song she sings.
