The Carmen McRae story is one of the most fascinating in recent musical Americana. Born in Brooklyn, Carmen was a studious little girl whose decided musical talent was apparent from the start. However, no one would have predicted that she would ever attain eminence as a singer, for she spent most of her spare time at the piano.
It was as an instrumentalist rather than as a singer that Carmen made her first impact on the world. But it was not long before she was recognized as a vocalist instead of a pianist. Her first discoverer was said to be Irene Wilson Kichings, a composer and first wife of Teddy Wilson. Mrs. Kichings’ discovery was shared by Benny Carter, arranger and alto-saxophonist, who gave Carmen a place in his band in 1944. Shortly afterwards, she was heard with Count Basic. When she toured with the band headed by Mercer Ellington (son of the famous “Duke”) she mar ried the jazz percussionist, Kenny Clarke, and went under the name of Carmen Clarke.
When the Mercer Ellington band broke up, Carmen went out as a single; for several years she doubled in brass-or to be more exact as a pianist and a singer at nightclubs and hotspots in New York and elsewhere. It was not until 1953 that Carmen came into her own. She appeared with the Mat Mathews Quintet, made records, was voted the best new female singer of the year in the poll organ- ized by Down Beat, and was signed by Decca. A year later, she was starred in a Carnegie Hall All-Star Jazz Concert, and kept on climbing the golden ladder of success. Hollywood saw and heard her next when she was featured in a Universal- International film.
Carmen McRae’s fame as a recording artist was solidly established with two Decca Long Play albums: “By Special Request” (DL 8173) and “Torchy!” (DL 8267). The present collection displays Carmen in varied moods. Some of the songs are in the rhythm tempo for which she is perhaps most noted, but the overall effect is that of the mood suggested by the title. In common with “Blue Moon,” the songs express a gentle sadness tinged with an even gentler humor. This is an echoing music-a nostalgia brought curiously up to date by the musing but vibrant voice of Carmen McRae.
