For once, an album title is exactly descriptive. How further to describe the quality of Edison’s swing? Quincy Jones recalls hearing him in a Seattle theatre about ten years ago when Quincy was learning the horn: “It was the directness of what he did that made such an impression on me. He was totally unpretentious, and he swung straight ahead. The only way I can sum it up is he has ‘pure heart’.”
While Edison’s warmth and rhythmic ease on these performances should be no surprise to those who have heard him with Basie and on previous Verve albums (e.g. Gee Baby Ain’t I Good to You, MG V-8211 and Sweets, MG V-8097), tenor Jimmy Forrest may be new to some. Jimmy was with Duke Ellington for a time, and later won a flare of rhythm and blues fame with his recording of Night Train. He’s been away from rhythm and blues and working with Edison for some time now, and indicates here, that like the leader, he has a direct, fully swinging jazz approach. His tone is full, and as Quincy notes, “He can drive – he’s of the ‘Jug’ (Gene Ammons) school that way but also has a pretty sound. And most ‘young cats on that instrument today don’t for some reason ness of sound.
have that rich-
Pianist Jimmy Jones is best known as an accompanist (he was with Sarah Vaughan for a number of years), and is considered by musicians a master of that unpublicized but demanding art along with such as Bobby Tucker, Hank Jones, Ellis Larkins and John Lewis. Jimmy, in fact, has written a manual on jazz accompaniment, published by Silhouette Music Company, and available through the Charles Hansen organization. He’s also as he shows here an uncommonly attractive soloist who, like Edison and Forrest, does not waste notes.

Charlie Persip proved with the now departed Dizzy Gillespie orchestra that he is already one of the most consistent and authoritative big band jazz drummers. Unlike many jazz drummers, however, who are superior at either small combo or large band drumming — but rarely at both Persip is equally valuable in either size operation. He’s also begun to do much free lance New York recording at which he’d displayed a thoroughly professional capacity to handle almost any kind of assignment. He’s a fluent reader and a thoroughly dependable support for free-style swinging, as here.
Joe Benjamin has been with a number of major jazz singers and players – Sarah Vaughan, Gerry Mulligan and Dave Brubeck, among them and is always reliably full in sound and firm of beat.
—
One of the more illuminating descriptions of Freddie Greene’s worth was given recently by a man who does much of the writing for the Count Basie book, and occasionally helps supervise the recordings of his charts. “When the studio is in confusion and everybody’s being noisy, you can look back in the band and there’s Freddie, quiet, observing, kind of a still point of order in the chaos.
“And if anything’s going wrong,” the arranger adds, “Freddie’s the first one whose advice I ask. He’s got everything covered.”
So have the others in this album. It’s a program by players united by a common desire and ability to swing collectively as well as individually and by a preference for the non-roccoco, the heart of the
matter.
