MAHALIA JACKSON is the Crowned Queen of all Gospel and Spiritual music, and stands to it as Maria Callas stands to the World of Opera. Gospel and Spirituals, a musical genre exclusive to American negroes in its origins, won world accep- tance immediately after its “invention” in the 19th century and this acceptance has never flagged but always grown, grown, grown.
MAHALIA JACKSON’s divine right of royalty within this genre is manifest to all or any who stand or sit and listen. There is controverty amongst the historians as to which came first – Soul, Blues or Gospel, but all evidence shows that Gospel and Spirituals predated all other American negro genres of music.
The American slave culture of the American slave negroes was a wail and a lamentation to a God in Whom they desperately believed but little comprehended. For them, if there had been no God, all of life would have been a black nightmare of incomprehensability.
In later years, following the Civil War, which Abraham Lincoln had seen in terms of a spiritual emancipation and physical manumission of American black slavedom, the form developed variations upon the theme – and one of these variations was the Blues. The nature of the African negro had rhythm. In its primordial form it had been a drum beat. From this rhythm evolved Rhythm- and thence from Rhythm flowed the Blues (another wail, another lamentation).
Finally there was the interjection of the still stronger beat, the jazz beat. And this latter was to invade the world and conquer large parts of it.
The first superb genius of the Gospel and Spiritual form was Sister Rosetta Tharpe, and among all the pupils she trained none was so inspired as Mahalia Jackson.
For while Mahalia sings Gospel there appears to be a whole host of heavenly angels escorting her into her own sublime heaven of a choir of angels.
No other artist of the Gospel and Spiritual form is or has been known who is her peer.
